Plans unveiled for school expansion

Posted

While they are not yet official or available to the general public, school board members at Colman-Egan this past week got a closer look at plans for the addition scheduled to be built onto the school ahead of the 2025-2026 school year.
More clearly detailed in this latest set of renderings are plans for each much-needed new classroom, right down to where new white-boards and other learning accessories and seating will be, along with plans for the exterior of the building, including potential artwork that will greet students and families as they pull up to the school each day.
“We’re just getting close now so…we’re very excited about the expansion and the growth,” said School Board President Kristen Taggart, as she and her colleagues visited with Project Manager Kyle Fisel of the engineering firm ISG.

The $6.3 million addition that voters approved this past fall includes a new preschool room, six other classrooms, a flex learning space, and a new weight room. The weight room will be a shared space for public use, how that will work is yet to be determined.
Behind the expansion is a rapidly growing student body, the Colman-Egan district continues to see growth, even more than anticipated this year.
The school, Taggart said, is maxed out for space.
The historically quiet, small rural town with a small school population is growing rapidly, especially since COVID — the rural community is easy to access given its proximity to the I29 and Hwy 34 corridors. It is also centrally located for families who work in either Sioux Falls, Brookings or Madison and considered largely affordable in comparison.
The timeline for the project, according to Fisel, will begin with a bid request opening on July 8th. Potential contractors will do a walk-through of the school and the new space in late July, a public bid opening is scheduled for August 12th, and notice of the award will be given on August 19th. Construction should begin in early September and a final walk through and completion should be done just ahead of the 2025-26 school year starting.
