New manager, new opportunities
Sunrise Ridge Golf Course, a small course with a lot of changes happening in and around it, just brought in a new General Manager for the Clubhouse and Campground. Mark Pownell, who is new to the area, is excited to be revising the menu and options for patrons at the clubhouse year-round. Pownell wasn’t ready to reveal any of those changes yet but hopes to have some fun new options in place sometime early-mid January.

It remains a work in progress, but new menu items and expanded hours are coming to the Sunrise Ridge Clubhouse in Colman.
Mark Pownell, the new General Manager at the Clubhouse and for the campground as well, didn’t know this would be his destiny in retirement. But he’s looking forward to it.
“We love Colman,” said Pownell, who only moved to the area from Sioux falls a year ago with his wife, Mindy.
The couple bought a home just across the street from the golf course and campground complex so that they could literally be smack dab in the middle of family and work. Pownell wanted to help his son transition the family business, TK Quartz & Granite, from Sioux Falls to Brookings. Mindy’s work is still based out of Sioux Falls, although she is fortunate to often work from home.
“It’s a small town, we really like it,” said Pownell.
As for Sunrise Ridge and the Clubhouse — it’s not easy to go from owning your own business to doing nothing. He helped his son for two years after he took the business over, and was needing something to do.
“It’s something different and it’ll be a challenge to get it up to where it should be, they’ve never served that much food there. We’re going to try and fill a void that’s missing in the town,” he told the Moody County Enterprise.
Pownell and his team are working on a new menu and after the first of the year, hours will expand. Currently, it’s only Wednesdays and Fridays that the Clubhouse is open in the offseason. Shortly after first of the year, he plans to be open Wednesdays through Saturdays.
“It’s a work in progress, it’s going to take some time to get that rearranged and get that all done,” he said, with a smile. “Hopefully we can find enough help to do it. We are hiring right now.”
