Neuenfeldt steps down from Flandreau PD

A Flandreau city police officer who was previously involved in a controversial high-speed chase that left multiple people injured has resigned from the department.
Officer Rob Neuenfeldt, who also formerly served as chief of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribal Police, stepped down recently for undisclosed reasons. City officials have not commented on the circumstances surrounding his departure.
Neuenfeldt was a central figure in a 2017 pursuit that ended in a crash leaving Morgan Ten Eyck and two other passengers with life-threatening injuries. Ten Eyck was later awarded more than $39.5 million in damages by a federal jury earlier this year.

The chase began after a South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper attempted to stop the vehicle, which failed to comply with commands, escalating through rural roads before ending in a collision. Neuenfeldt joined the pursuit during its course.
In April 2023, a federal judge denied a government motion to dismiss the lawsuit, allowing the case to proceed to trial. The court found that questions remained regarding Neuenfeldt’s potential negligence during the pursuit.
It remains unclear whether his resignation is connected to the outcome of the lawsuit, though public criticism of his role had mounted across the community in recent months.
Attempts to reach Neuenfeldt for comment were unsuccessful.
