Major Hwy 34 reconstruction to begin in Colman

Posted

Those who routinely travel Highway 34 through Colman are being asked to prepare for what officials hope will be only minor delays as a major road construction project kicks off.
Work is set to begin in earnest this week on the $10.88 million project, with the initial focus on pavement removal on the south half of the highway. Project Manager Shane Waterman with IMEG said traffic will be rerouted through the north half of the roadway, with temporary traffic control lights installed to alternate traffic flow. Driveway Access Devices, complete with turn arrows, will help guide drivers navigating side streets and driveways along the project.
Hulstein Excavating of Edgerton, Minnesota, is leading the road improvements, which will include upgraded storm sewer systems, drainage improvements, a new concrete surface, a center turn lane, and better traffic signage. Other significant upgrades include new bike and pedestrian paths with lighting, curb ramps, and sidewalks, improving safety and accessibility for those walking through the area.
The work stretches from 469th Avenue to Colman’s eastern city limits — a project deemed essential as traffic continues to increase in the area due to growing populations and business expansions.
Residents, commuters, and visitors are asked to stay patient as crews work to improve the corridor, with final touches expected to be completed by October of this year.
