Colman-Egan senior and valedictorian Lanie Mousel is involved in extracurricular activities year-round, both academic and athletic. Despite her busy schedule, she also makes time to volunteer in the community and work part-time.
For her outstanding character, achievements and goodwill, Mousel has been named Student of the Month by Heartland Energy and KJAM Radio.
“Lanie is an extremely dedicated and hardworking student in the classroom and in the community,” said Colman-Egan Principal Jesse Johnson. “She serves as student body president and has been on the A-honor roll every year of high school. She is a role model and leader in all areas of her life.”

Mousel is a multi-sport student athlete, participating in volleyball, basketball, track and softball. She’s earned Academic All-State honors in both volleyball and basketball and is also a three-year member of National Honor Society.
Outside of school, Mousel is passionate about serving her community through volunteer work, especially at her church, St. Peter Parish. She has been an altar server for seven years and a sacristan for one year and helps at the annual church dinner as well as the annual church cleaning.
Mousel has also spent the past three years working as a lifeguard and volunteering at the local Iott’s plant sale.
Mousel is the daughter of Monte and Crystal Mousel. After high school she plans to attend the University of South Dakota to major in nursing.
The “Student of the Month” is awarded through a partnership of Heartland Energy and KJAM Radio in Madison and recognizes exceptional students in one of five area school districts. Heartland Energy provides wholesale power to the cities of Arlington, Colman, Howard, Madison and Volga, all of which are in the KJAM listening area. Officials from each participating school nominate students for the award.
Each month of the school year, Heartland Energy presents an outstanding student from one of these schools with a recognition certificate and small token, and advertisements announcing the winning student air on KJAM Radio.
