July 4th: Cool but dazzling

Posted

This year’s 4th of July celebrations in and around the Moody County Museum grounds were delayed a bit in the morning due to rain, but the crowds came out as soon as the last drop of rain fell. The accompanying cloud cover provided a reprieve from the recent heat and allowed visitors to comfortably soak up all of the quintessential small town holiday celebration offerings the Museum and its team of volunteers provide each year. Visitors gathered for an honoring ceremony at Noon for local Korean War Veterans as food and other vendors lined the grounds. Families and friends gathered to share a meal, listen to the City Band perform, learn about community resources, pet a camel, and browse some of the history that they otherwise might not stop in typically to learn about the county and region. The day wrapped up with the annual incredible fireworks display that the Flandreau Santee Sioux put on just outside the Royal River Casino and Hotel complex. Families and friends again gathered on the grounds and alongside neighboring parking lots and roads to watch the almost half-hour long show on what turned out to be a cool but beautiful holiday.
