Highway 34 improvement project kicks off in Colman
Preliminary work has begun on the road improvement project scheduled for Highway 34 through Colman.
Utility crews have started marking underground lines and preparing for construction, which is set to begin mid-month, weather permitting.
Construction is scheduled to run from March through October of this year, with work beginning on the south side of the highway.
The road will be removed, utilities installed, and the road graded and paved before work begins on the north side.
A heads-up for travelers and a reminder to neighboring residents: the Highway 34 project will start just west of town and extend to the eastern city limits, impacting traffic flow through the area throughout the project. Drivers should expect delays along the corridor throughout the busy summer season — the highway sees thousands of travelers each day as they move between I29 and the Madison area.
The improvements to the growing community of Colman will be worth it though as it Highway 34 Improvement Project Kicks Off in Colmanwill include grading, new surfacing, curb and gutter work, a 5-foot sidewalk on the south side, an 8-foot shared-use path on the north, a center turn lane, upgraded lighting, and improved storm sewers.
Residents have attended meetings over the past several years to learn more about the estimated $8.9 million project, which began planning in 2001.
The project will coincide with another street and infrastructure upgrade near the golf course, potentially making navigation more challenging as traffic volume increases with growth in neighboring communities.
Hulstein Excavating of Edgerton, Minnesota, submitted the lowest combined bid of $10,881,751.95 for the work.
