MONTROSE – Senior Karter Headrick earned the 215 pound title at the Big East/Lake Central Conference wrestling meet held in Montrose Saturday, February 8.
Three Fliers came in third namely Teague Bergjord, Justin Klein and Tyton Peters.
As a team, Flandreau was just four points out of fourth place scoring 109 points and taking sixth.
Kingsbury County won the title with 176 and Clark/Willow Lake was second with 151.5. Third place went to Elk Point-Jefferson with 138 points, fourth to Mt. Vernon/Plankinton-Corisica-Stickney with 113. Taking fifth was Beresford/Alcester-Hudson at 110.
This was the highest finish for the Flier team since the team from 2016 took third place.
“On another high note,” said Chamblin, “We had four placers (in the placing round) and we ran the table going 4-0 in the finals.”
“All four wrestled really well on the day. We had others who had a great day, too, but just came up short,” he noted.
Seeded number one, Headrick had a first round bye, then had two quick pins taking down Martin Welch of Garretson in 1:09 and Andrew Gunderson of Sioux Valley in 15 seconds. He faced Breyton Johnson of KC in the finals and won his first decision of the season, 9-2. Headrick finished his conference tourney career with back to back titles.
Flier junior Teague Bergjord started his day in the 120 pound bracket with a bye and then quickly pinned CJ Peterson of Chester in 48 seconds. He lost in the semis to eventual champion, Landon Flogstad of McCook Central/Montrose, in an 11-3 major decision. Bergjord regrouped and won over Chase Costello of Garretson, 1:30 fall, and took third with a 2:17 fall over Sebastian Castillo of B/A-H.
Another junior, Justin Klein at 175 pounds, pinned Liam Gunnon of KC in 40 seconds and then Jesiah Hofer of Chester in 39 seconds. He fell to Gunner Ewing of EPJ in a 1:12 fall in the semifinals. Klein came back and pinned Cole Schlueter of Garretson in 2:19 and pinned Wyatt Hardt of SV in 2:36 to capture third.
Tyton Peters took third in the heavyweight division by pinning Oliver Nedved of Baltic in 38 seconds and then taking a pin over Sam Crowe of KC in 1:36. In the semifinals, the sophomore Flier lost by fall to Tanner Baatz of Garretson, 1:36, where he then faced Donald Gergen of Parker and won by fall in 1:25. Peters won a second period fall over Addison Peterson of EPJ, 2:18, to place
Other Fliers picking up wins at the meet were Zach Pederson finishing 3-2, Gabe Frias and Hayden Pearson at 2-2 and Dalin Billmeier and Rhyder Behnke, 1-2.

“Zach had three wins, just a match short of placing,” said Chamblin. “He’s in highly competitive weight class.”
Chamblin saw some good things from his first year wrestlers.
“Hayden, Dalin and Rhyder all picked up wins over regional opponents.”
“We have been wrestling really well and will finish our dual season Thursday in Garretson.”
First match is at 5 p.m.
Currently the Fliers are 10-5 in duals this year.
Last Friday, Tenley Quick was in the Yankton Girls Invitational and went 1-2. She’ll compete in the girls regional tournament on Thursday, Feb. 20 in Salem.
On Saturday, Feb. 22, the boys’ team will try to punch their ticket to the State Class B wrestling tourney at the Region 2B meet also in Salem. State will be held the following weekend in Rapid City.
