Glenda Hansen, 81, of Flandreau, SD, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 26, 2025 at Second Presbyterian Church in Flandreau, SD.
Glenda Rae Jewett was born on February 26, 1944, in Colorado Springs, CO to Leslie and Marvel (Rusk) Jewett, she was the sixth of 15 children. Her family relocated to Flandreau, SD when Glenda was an infant. Glenda was blessed to grow up with a large family and always remarked about how lucky she was to have the sisters and brothers she had. She had a special relationship each of them and often spoke fondly about the escapades and adventures that she and her siblings got themselves into in their younger years. As she and her siblings grew up, they also grew closer; raising their children together, vacationing together, hosting birthdays and holidays and Sunday coffee as often as their schedules would allow.
On August 4, 1962, Glenda married Ralph Hansen at the Second Presbyterian Church in Flandreau, SD. Shortly after being married the young couple moved to Gibbon, NE for Ralph’s work before returning to Flandreau to build their family’s legacy. The pair were blessed with their only son, Thomas Alan, in September of 1964 and a year (and a week) later, in September of 1965, they had their first daughter, Karla Rae. In September of 1972, Glenda and Ralph bought Bar X Bar in Flandreau, SD and in December of the same year the couple’s second daughter, Kimberly Jo, was born.
Glenda received her education at Flandreau Public Schools and then worked a variety of jobs including in-home daycare, Eaton Dakota and Larson Manufacturing in Brookings, SD. Of course, Glenda is most well-known for the time she spent behind the pine rail at Bar X Bar, a bar she and her late husband owned for more than 50 years.
In the early 90’s Glenda began bartending at Bar X Bar full time, working six (closing) shifts per week, right up through the months immediately preceding her passing. For more than 30 years Glenda poured into the patrons of Bar X like an extension of her own family. A truly remarkable woman, Glenda was honored to be a confidant, mentor and friend to everyone she encountered. She was an avid supporter of her hometown Flandreau Fliers, the Flandreau Cardinals or any team her grandkids were playing on.
Glenda had a zest for life that was unmatched by many. She was active in many areas including decades of bowling and dart leagues, with her sisters, brothers, son, daughters and grandkids as her teammates throughout the years. Glenda had a distinct laugh that was infectious and a quick wit that would always catch the unsuspecting. Simply put, she was the one of a kind and will be missed by so many.
Grateful for having shared in her life are her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Tom Hansen of Flandreau and his children Mitchell, Jacy and Kinsley; Karla (Brad) Bjerke of Flandreau and their children Meagan (Brandon) Olson, Worthing, SD, Jenna (Jamie) Vallette, Summerset, SD, Kara (Brett) Burch, Fort Madison, IA, Michael Mohr, Sioux Falls, SD, Breean (Tony) Bovay, Pittsburg, PA; and grandchildren, Remington Jacobson, Braedy and Brice Olson, Ella, William and Parker Vallette, Maris and Ripken Burch, Jacob Mohr, Talon, Reagan and Jack Bovay. Kim Hansen of Flandreau and her children Lexy (Dominic) Ledbetter, Sioux Falls, SD, and Brody Johnson and granddaughters, Kaia and Kamryn. Siblings: Ronald Jewett, Dick Jewett, David Jewett, Sally Sorenson, Nancy Dahmen, Verna Jean Robles, Francis Kay (Jerry) Umbreit, Arthur (Millie) Jewett.
Glenda was met at Heaven’s pearly gates by her husband Ralph; parents, Leslie and Marvel Jewett; in-laws, Otto and Minnie Hansen; siblings, Donald Jewett (infant), Dennis (Stretch) Jewett, Linda Sue Jewett, Connie Peper, Betty Ann Grunwald, Gary Jewett; brothers-in-law, Edward Hansen Sr, Frank Hansen, Marvin Hansen, Paul Dahmen, Marlin Grunwald; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Jewett, Glenda Jewett, Kay Jewett. Nephews, Justin Jewett and Mark Jewett; nieces, Judith Hansen Miller-Peterson, Janet Johnson, JoAnn Sundermeyer and Joyce “Bugga” Doyle.
