Tribal spokesman Francis Wakeman initially thought it was a prank.
A phone call had informed him that 500 turkeys were being donated to the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe — to be delivered within 24 hours.
Wakeman, reassured it wasn’t a joke, quickly arranged for the donation and orchestrated a rapid distribution to ensure tribal members received a turkey in time for the holidays.
By 5 p.m. the next day, just one pallet of turkeys — along with one lone bird — remained after most had been generously distributed to local families.
