Frigid yet festive kickoff to the holiday season

Posted

A steady stream of parade entries lit up downtown Flandreau this past Saturday night as the temperatures dipped into the single digits for the first time this winter season.
The downtown area was bustling with families and friends meeting up — many getting together inside warm vehicles or area businesses open for the annual downtown holiday Christmas parade.
A few even brought their own fire pits to stay warm while the parade rolled by. There were close to two dozen entries in this year’s holiday parade with the entire event lasting close to a half hour, culminating with a tree lighting ceremony again at the County Courthouse. The lawn will remain lit up through the remainder of the year each night. A small park on 2nd Avenue in the downtown area will also remain lit up with a mailbox especially designed to hold letters for Santa and a photo op scene for those that may want a fun holiday picture to share. Letters for Santa are due back December 10.
The yearly event continues to be hosted by volunteers, donors, the holiday committee along with additional support from the City of Flandreau. More photos on page 10 of this week's print edition.
Parade winners: Family-Johanson/Triple J Hay; Business-B&B RV; Organization-National Honor Society and Humorous-Happy Youngsters 4-H.
