Free Lunch to be given at FPS

Posted

The Flandreau School Board voted to add free lunches to the school starting immediately at the meeting on February 13. This is in addition to the free breakfast the school is currently providing and approved at last month’s meeting. The school is able to offer these programs to the students due to the percentage of children that qualify for free or reduced lunches on a regular basis. This program is only for students and will only go through the end of this year and does not cover the cost of any extra milk or entrees. Business Manager Stacey VanBeek also told board know that this cannot be retroactive meaning there is still currently close to $1,000 dollars in past due funds from students that still needs to be paid to the Food Service program. Flandreau school accepts donations to help reduced that total.
The Board also had the final reading and approval of the Electronic Communication Device policy.  Superintendent Rick Weber says enforcement is key to the policy’s success.
Resignations accepted by the were Lexi Fricke, High School Secretary; Sam Luze, Elementary SPED; Brenda Brayman, Elementary Custodian; Owen Parsley, Assistant Cross Country Coach.

New hires included Tracie Bushkosfsky as the High School Secretary and Annaleese Rios as a Middle School Paraprofessional.
During the updates from the principal Kristi Fischer, high school principal, informed the board that Senior Arianna Weston has advanced in the state competition in Voice of Democracy speech contests. Miss Weston shared her speech with the community during the Veteran’s Day program this past November.
All three schools took part in fundraisers for The BreadBasket this previous month. The Middle and Elemenary schools raised 908 food donations to be given during their SOUPer Bowl event, while the High School raised $300 dollars with Valentine sales. The next events for the schools will be Jump Rope for heart in the Middle school and “Egg My Yard” by the National Honor Society in the High School.
Driver’s Education was the last item covered by the Board before executive session. The dates for the course were set as May 30th to June 8, depending on snow days. The instructor will be Robert Lack a middle school teacher. The course is a first come first basis for 30 students who are at least 13 years of age as of January 1, 2023. The cost of the course will be $260 and will be open to non-FPS students should there still be availability.
The Board then entered executive session. Once normal session resumed the board voted to waive the breach of contract for Sam Luze. Miss. Luze was one of the resignations the board approved earlier in the evening. The Board will meet next month on March 13th.
