Come for breakfast, stay for the mingling and the opportunity to learn more about a career in flying along with the renovations and expansion planned for the Flandreau Municipal Airport. Rain or shine, the annual Flandreau Fly-In returns this coming Sunday with this year’s breakfast being hosted by the Boys and Girls Club of Moody County. Doors open to the public at 8am and the event will end at 1 p.m.
The event is significant, Brad Bjerke with the Airport Board and City Council hopes, to show area youth there are opportunities in learning to fly. He adds that he hopes it helps to raise awareness and excitement about the expansion project in the works.
“An airport is such an asset to a town. It really does create opportunities for economic development and because of the delay in this project here, we’ve actually lost some business opportunities. We’ve had some people interested in having their aircraft here and businesses moving here. They’re gone. But with this new expansion in the works, we’ve had more inquiries on more aircraft coming here,” Bjerke said. The Flandreau Airport opened sometime in the 1930s.
It’s been a few years that the Flandreau Municipal Airport has hosted its annual Fly-In event but this year, the Airport Board and City officials are excited to announce its return.
While the weather will play a part and final confirmations are happening yet as to what aircraft and pilots might take part that day, SDSU, Avera, a number of individual pilots along with a Grumman T-6 Texan will be in the mix.
