Flandreau’s Track and Field teams both competed in the Lake Central and Big East Conference meets last May 7 and May 9. According to Coach Owen Parsley, even with two meets in three days, the teams “embraced their opportunities and batted marvelously” as they set 19 personal records at the LCC and 28 at the BEC.
Faith Wiese broke her own school record on Tuesday and then broke it again on Thursday in the 800 meter run.

Lake Central Conference
DESMET – Sioux Valley won both the boys (189) and girls (155) team titles at the Lake Central Conference track and field meet held Tuesday, May 7 under cool and windy conditions.
The Flier teams found the boys taking third with 107 points and the girls fourth with 114 points.
For the girls, Morgan Sheppard and Kiley Westberry both won an event and Faith Wiese won a pair and broke another one of her own school records in doing so.
Wiese hit the long race and ran the 3200 meter run in 11:18.93, “her second fastest 3200 meter run,” said Parsley and then knocked nearly three seconds off her school record in the 800 meter run. Her time was 2:21.72 to surpass last season’s mark of 2:24.4.
Sheppard won the 100 meter dash in 13.39. She came in seeded fourth and ran to her first place finish upsetting the rest of the competition.
Kiley Westberry won the 400 in a season best time of 1:02.91.
“Kiley flew to that first place LCC finish,” said Parsley.

Big East Conference
BALTIC– The Flandreau Flier girls finished in third place in the Big East Conference using three first place wins. They scored 110 points. Sioux Valley won with 132 and Chester was second with 115.
The boys team saw a lot of tough competition and fell to eighth place scoring 53 points. Sioux Valley won the boys’ title with 172 points while Baltic finished second with 121 points.
The weather was near perfect for a track and field meet with a bit of wind, but mostly clear skies and warm temps.
For the Flier girls’ team, Faith Wiese was a three-time gold medal winner.
In her first open 400, she ran a time of 1:01.16 to win and move into number 11 in the state top 24 and number four all-time for Flandreau. And then the Flier sophomore won the 800 meter run in 2:18.83 to break her own school record. “This is her third time this year breaking her previous school record in the 800M run (2:19.83; #6 in the State),” said Parsley.
Wiese was also the opening leg of the 4x400 meter relay with teammates Rona Streitz, Ella Hoffman and Kiley Westberry to win in a time of 4:18.68.
The boys finished with a pair of second place finishes. Brenton Westberry finished second with a time of 2:01.25 in the 800-meter run.
“Brenton Westberry, keeping with his distance roots, ran out of his mind at the 800, putting him #12 in the State Top 24 and #4 all time in the FHS Boys Top 24,” said Parsley.
Tanner Reed was runner-up with a time of 11:11.40 in the 3200-meter run as he set his personal best on the season.
Other PRs on the day included Lily Klein in the discus, Kenton James in the 3200, Schmidt in the mile and the 800 meter run, Josie Hamilton in the 400, 800 and 1600, Kiley Westberry in the 800 (#9 in state and #4 all time on the Flier girls top 10) and Brenton Westberry in the 100 and 400.
The Fliers moved a couple of middle school runners up for the conference meets.
“Ignoring age and intimidation, a few middle schoolers also earned the right to shine at the conferences,” said Parsley. “Eighth grader Logan Kontz took fifth in the LCC 3200M and 7th grader Rona Streitz tried out the hurdles and (as noted above) helped her BEC 4X400 to a 1st place finish,” he added.
Flandreau was to be at Hamlin on Monday and then will host their own Last Chance meet on Thursday, May 16. The Last Chance meets replace the Regional meets since the top 24 in each event earn a ticket to the state meet.
The State Track and Field Championships will be held in Sioux Falls at Howard Wood Field, May 23-24-25.
