Flier Booster Club to elect officers at annual meeting set for May 20

The Flandreau Flier Booster Club has had a very active year, supporting local athletes from grades second through seniors in every sporting season. The group will hold their annual meeting next Wednesday, May 20, at 5:30 p.m. in the Moody County Resource Center. Everyone who supports Flier athletics is encouraged to attend the meeting.
Serving as the Booster Club officers this year are Michelle Iott, president; Jud Krull, vice president; Megan Severtson, secretary; Lori Williams, treasurer and Sandy Sheppard, board member at large. According to the group’s by-laws, officers will be elected by majority vote of the members present to serve for a one-year term. Any officer can be re-elected to serve another term, and the new terms begin on July 1.
Anyone interested in becoming an officer for the Flier Booster Club should reach out to one of the current officers and come to the meeting next week.
Current President Michelle Iott said, “I am involved not only to provide opportunities for our youth, but to support our coaches and their respective programs to provide what additional resources they may need that our school is unable to provide.”

The local group has supported its athletes in a number of ways this past school year. They have organized rallies in the fall, winter, and spring to highlight the upcoming season of each individual sport. Team introductions, food to enjoy, games and special contests all made these family events something for the entire community to attend.
A huge project spearheaded by the Booster Club was the purchase and installation of two new video boards in both the high school and elementary gyms. Under the direction of Nathan Hill, school technology teacher, high school students learned to man and operate the boards for the various sporting events. The boards have also been used for a variety of school programs, including Veterans’ Day, prom, and graduation.
Other activities sponsored by the Flier Booster members included a float in the homecoming parade and purchasing basketball jerseys for grades two through six, which can be checked out by boys’ and girls’ coaches and used for the season.
They sponsor the Booster Club basketball tourney for youth the weekend after Thanksgiving, which has brought numerous out-of-town teams to Flandreau. The club also hosts the Booster wrestling tournament each December, providing ticket takers, concessions, and the coaches’ hospitality room. Their track meet, canceled this spring, is also an annual event by the Booster Club, and this year was the inaugural softball tournament at which the club would handle concessions. Yet to come this spring/summer will be the Booster Club golf tournament.
As the group pays off the video boards to the Flandreau School district, remaining and accumulating funds will be used to complete the vision for a video board at the James “Tiger” McGlone football field. Current funds are funneled to teams for use at camps or training events, or as requested by local school coaches for team needs.
Through the years, many in the Flandreau community have stepped in to keep the Booster Club going and strong. New members are always needed, as well as their attendance at the monthly meetings. The local club is grateful for all the support that they receive from parents and fans for their projects throughout the year.
