Firefighters investigate flashing lights, burning smell at old Egan School

Firefighters from Colman, Flandreau, and Trent responded this past week to fire alarms sounding at the old Egan School.
Neighbors noted that lights had been flashing inside the hallway around the gymnasium area since early in the day Monday, but add alarms have gone off in the past with nothing amiss, so they weren’t sure what might be happening.

But just after noon, a burning smell suggested there could actually be a problem, and it prompted a few concerned neighbors, especially those who hate to see anything happen to the old school, call 911.
Flandreau Fire Chief Don Peters said that because the alarms had been sounding for an extended period of time, the system appeared to be overheating, particularly on the second floor of the school, where the current owner seems to have converted old classrooms into bedrooms.
The current owner lives out of state and returns routinely during the summer months. Authorities indicated the owner had been contacted regarding the incident and was planning to return in the near future.
Colman Fire Chief Justin Landis said that power was cut to the system, and no further issues were found.
