After 26 years of service to his country Staff Sergeant Bart Sample will retire, hanging up his cover. Though his last official day in the Army will not be until August 1, 2023, SGT Sample will start his terminal leave and begin to enjoy some much deserved rest and relaxation.
SSG Sample began his military career in 1997 when he enlisted for active duty. He was station at the Fort Lewis Army base in Washington State until 2000. Once completing his active duty enlistment SSG Sample returned home continuing his service as a National Guard Member.
He spent the next 7 years as a nonactive National Guard member with the 1742nd Transportation Unit out of Flandreau, reporting to drill on the first weekend of the month and anytime Uncle Sam called. It was not until 2007 that SSG Sample took on an Active National Guard assignment with the DET 1 1742nd Transportation Unit. During 2010 he his duties increased as he was given the responsibility to be the DET Readiness Officer for the Unit. SSG Sample has held that position for the remainder of his career.
SSG Sample also served during two deployment during his career, one of which he fought to have happen. During 2003 SSG Sample had been in a horrible car accident while traveling in Montana. He had vehicle problems and had pulled over to check on his car. While checking on his vehicle he was struck by another motorist. SSG Sample was severely hurt from this crash almost ending his military career. The 1742nd Unit was also being activated during this time while SSG Sample was finishing his recovery. Through perseverance and dedication SSG Sample was able to persuade the doctors to let him travel with his unit to Iraq to complete the mission. He returned state side in 2004.
SSG Sample would travel over seas again in 2014 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, staying in country for a year.
SSG Sample will be replaced by SSG Aman out of Brookings. SSG Aman will travel back and forth Flandreau to Brookings.
