“Embrace new experiences” and “Share talents with others” among messages to new graduates
It was an absolutely beautiful weekend for families and friends to gather and celebrate graduates at both Colman-Egan and Flandreau Public Schools. Graduation ceremonies were held this past Saturday at 2 p.m. in both districts and the gymnasiums were absolutely packed as students donned their caps and gowns for one last emotional appearance.
In Colman gymnasium, the Class of 2024 reminisced about their shared experiences, from the best moments to the toughest challenges, including navigating the changes brought about by living through the COVID-19 pandemic.
Superintendent Scott Hemmer shared invaluable life lessons as the keynote speaker, emphasizing the importance of taking responsibility for one’s happiness, embracing change without fear, and not being afraid to change course.
He also stressed the significance of respect, both for oneself and others, and reminded them that comparison is the thief of joy. He then urged them to show up and do more than what’s expected, knowing that true success comes from going above and beyond.
In Flandreau, Flier Football Coach and Physical Education teacher, Josh Edlund, took center stage as the featured speaker, offering words of wisdom and encouragement to graduating seniors.
He reminded this year’s graduating class that he’s known them since sixth grade, and witnessed their competitive spirit. It is a trait he said would serve them all well as they venture out into the world. Sharing a quote from the legendary Jackie Robinson, Edlund said, “Life is not a spectator sport,” and urged them to use their gifts to bless others, to be selfless, and to serve their communities.
He also left them with a quote from Mark Twain, reminding them that formal schooling isn’t the only way to learn incredible lessons in life. He encouraged the graduates to routinely step outside of their comfort zones and embrace new experiences as opportunities for growth.
