Eight Fliers place at Jesse James Invitational meet

GARRETSON – Flandreau placed eight matmen on the podium at the Jesse James Invitational Wrestling tournament on Saturday, January 11.
Taking the top positions were junior Teague Bergjord going 3-0 at 120 pounds and senior Karter Headrick, also 3-0, at 215.
Flandreau took fifth as team scoring 162 points from the 12 schools in attendance.
“Going in we had a goal to place as a team in the top five and for everyone to win a match,” said Head Coach Cody Chamblin. “We got that top five and we got some wins for our younger kids.”
Tri-Valley won the invite with 280 points followed by Groton Area with 224.5. Beresford/Alcester-Hudson was third with 187.5 and Elk Point-Jefferson came in fourth.
Bergjord opened the day in the second seed position and was awarded a bye in the first round. He then won a 16-1 tech fall over Cade Aasheim of Lennox before pinning Kyson Kucker of Groton Area in 5:29 in the semis. In the finals he won a hard-fought 9-6 win over top seeded Owen Bunde of Tri-Valley.
Headrick, top seeded, also had an opening round bye before facing Emory Lefers of Lennox. The Flier won by tech fall, 21-6. He pinned Elliot Powell of Tri-Valley in 1:42 in the semis. In the final match, he met Aiden Hibelink of Chester Area and pinned the Flyer in 1:20.
Garretson, Lennox, Marion/Freeman, Chester Area, Baltic, Scotland and Hanson rounded out the field.
Earning third place wins were Zach Pederson at 126, Gabe Frias at 132 and Justin Klein at 175 all recording 4-1 marks on the day. Fourth place was taken by Hayden Pearson (3-2), Rhyder Behnke (4-2) was fifth and in his first outing of the year, Tyton Peters (3-3), took sixth.
Chamblin was happy with the way his younger and newer wrestlers finished.
“This was Gabe’s first time on the podium,” said Chamblin, “and we also had a couple more firsts on the team.”

“Hayden Pearson is making strides on the team finishing fourth. Then at 190, Rhyder Behnke had a great week for a first year wrestler. He went 3-0 at the Dells JV meet and then placed 5th going 2-2 on Saturday.”
“Something Flandreau hasn’t seen in a few years was a big guy out on the mat - Tyton Peters. He had a good day placing sixth going 3-3 on the day.”
In the third place matches, Zach Pederson won over Ben Seeley of Beresford/Alcester-Hudson by a 19-3 tech fall, Gabe Frias defeated Bode Fennel of Elk Point-Jefferson, 4-1 and Justin Klein pinned Caleb Heuertz of EPJ in 1:24.
Chamblin said even the kids that didn’t notch a win showed great improvement and fought hard.
“Aston Duncan went 1-2 on the day and shows improvement each time on the mat. Dalin Billmeier faced some great wrestlers but fell 0-2, but he’s improving as well. Asael Garreau is a takedown machine but we just need to find a way to finish a match; he fell 0-2 on the day. Preston Meyer went 1-2 on the day fighting hard in every match.”
Tuesday night, the team was to be in Parkston for a quad with the host Trojans, Parker and West Lyon, IA. Saturday, they head to Tri-Valley schools for a tournament with several teams in attendance. Next Thursday, January 23, they host their final quad in the Flandreau Elementary Gym when Howard, Deuel and Hamlin/Castlewood come to town. First match is at 5 p.m. It is also Parent Night.
“ Some of our older kids got some big region wins on Saturday and got revenge on some losses. The team is looking good and we are working out the kinks the next month for when it counts to punch that ticket (to state),” noted Chamblin.
