County declares state of emergency following flood damage

Posted

Damage from heavy rains and flash flooding earlier this summer prompted the Moody County Commission to declare a state of emergency last week to seek federal funds for repairs, primarily to roads in the southeast part of the county.
Alliance Township along Pipestone Creek appears to have experienced the worst of the damage.

Wayne Holt, a lifelong resident of the area, said the creek has flooded before, with 2019 being the worst he has seen in his lifetime. This year was a close second, with water backing up between his house and barn.
The area saw between six to ten inches of rain over a short period, washing out several culverts and roadbeds. Much of the damage along the roadways in Alliance Township has been temporarily shored up using county, township, and resident resources, but Holt and county officials say more work is needed to stabilize and rebuild culverts and roadbeds.
