Six area school’s drama departments perform in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center, on the campus of South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD, on January 22, 2025 in the Regional One-Act Play Festival.
Colman Egan competed against Arlington, Castlewood, DeSmet, Deubrook Area and Estelline. The Colman-Egan cast did not advance to the State Festival but turned in a good performance. The judge’s choice of the top two schools advance to the State Festival. Colman-Egan’s director is Sonya Herbert.
The Colman-Egan students performed, “When Bad Things Happen to Good Actors,” written by Ian McWethy and Jason Pizzarello. The play is about a group of students who are performing a remake of the Wizard of Oz. Their drama teacher rewrote the play to make it suitable for a One Act Competition. Everything that can go wrong does, from a made-up character named Dewey who cannot remember his lines, to a not so cowardly lion.
The students who performed from Colman Egan and those who received Outstanding Performance Awards (noted with an *) were:
*Brooke Wright as Dorothy and Mom; *Jakob Thompson as Scarecrow and Guard; *Emilia Mays as Glinda, Mopsi, and Mimi; *Kadin Thompson as Toto; Kayden McLaughlin as Dewey and Guard; Izzie Lee as Tinman, Bo, and Ojo; Vada Johnson as Cowardly Lion, Herbie, and Lucy; Marisol Ayala as Wicked Witch, and Building Manager; Sadie McCorkle, running lights.
