Cardinals and Blue Teal battle it out to extra innings

FLANDREAU – It was Flandreau vs. Flandreau on the amateur diamond last Friday, June 13.
And it came down to Tash Lunday’s walk-off double in the bottom of the 11th to score two runs giving the Blue Teal a 13-12 win over the Cardinals, Friday night in the Flandreau City Park.
With the Blue Teal as the home team and leading 11-6 in the top of the ninth, the Cardinals weren’t ready to be done and blasted out six runs on five hits in the visitor half of the inning to tie the game at 11. The Teal failed to score in the last half of the ninth forcing extra innings.
The same rules apply for extra innings as in Major League. A runner is placed on second base to open the inning.
Neither team scored in the 10th.
In the top of the 11th, an RBI single by Grant Hieb gave the Cardinals the lead, 12-11.

In the Teal half of the inning, Kelly Lewis was placed on second base, Tristan Peters sacrificed to advance Lewis to third and then Michael Witte walked to place runners on first and third. Lunday hit the game winning double scoring both Lewis and Witte to end the 3.5 hour game.
Both offenses were strong at the plate as Flandreau Blue Teal collected 11 hits and Flandreau Cardinals garnered 15 in the high-scoring affair.
Lunday started the game on the mound, but Tristan Peters earned the win for the Blue Teal. The right-handed pitcher surrendered only one hit and no Cardinal runs in the extra two innings, striking out one and walking two.
Lunday almost completed the game for the Blue Teal. In nine innings of work he gave up 14 Cardinals hits, 11 runs (10 earned), struck out six and walked five in 163 pitches on the night.
Dallas Schneiderman was the opening pitcher for the Cardinals allowing six hits and six runs (4 earned) over five innings. He struck out six and walked five.
He was relieved by Curt Anderson for three innings. He gave up four hits and five runs (4 earned) and struck out six Teal batters.
Noel Burgos took the loss coming in for the final two and two-thirds innings giving up the Teal’s winning hit and runs.
Flandreau Blue Teal swatted out 11 hits in the game. Micah Otto went 4-for-5 at the plate with a double to lead the team. Tanner Christenson and Lunday each drove in three runs and Tristan Van Wassenhove collected two hits for Blue Teal in four at bats. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, amassing 13 walks for the game. Lunday picked up three along with his double. On defense, the Blue Teal turned two double plays against the Cardinals.
Hieb led the Cardinals with five RBI hitting 2-for-5 on the day. JaColby Anderson led his team with three hits in five at bats and two RBI. Anderson (2), Hieb, Bret Severtson and Keith Cutler all doubled.
The Cardinals were also patient at the plate, piling up seven walks in the game; Burgos walked twice. The Cardinals turned one double play in the game.
Coming up the Cardinals have a road schedule. Thursday, they’re at Colman, Sunday in a double header at the Woodducks in Humboldt and then June 26 at Madison. They return to Cardinal Field on Tuesday, July 1 hosting Canova.
The Blue Teal will be home on the Blind at the Big Sioux Field for the next three games. Thursday, they host the Woodducks, Sunday, the Mudcats and then Thursday, June 26, Canova.
