Crews with Bowe’s Construction out of Brookings wrap up work on the new Christensen/Egan Road Bridge just northwest of Flandreau. Asphalt and dirt work that will support the new raised approaches on both the north and south sides of the Big Sioux River should be done as of this week. A new guard rail will then bring the project one step closer to completion.
“After that there aren’t any real big projects that will need to be done to get it completed and opened up. It’s hard to give an exact date of when that will be but I would guess within the next 10 days or 2 weeks,” said County Highway Superintendent Andy Muller, late this past week. He added that the weather may be a factor though in how quickly everything would wrap up on the $2.4 million project.
The north-south highway is a thoroughfare for residents, farmers, and travelers alike as they make their way between Egan, Flandreau and Brookings or Ward. Drivers have made the most of the situation and traveled alternate routes for months, but the bridge reopening will be a celebrated milestone.
