The Boys and Girls Club of Moody County has a very exciting project they’re working on, according to Jody Hernandez, the new CEO for the Boys and Girls Club Northern Plains told Flandreau City Council members this past week.
“The numbers (of members) have just skyrocketed and the building is bursting at the seams so we’re really happy to start on this expansion project and see what we can do with the community,” said Hernandez.
Plans to add onto the current club have been in the works for quite some time, but a formal announcement kicks things off in earnest. The need, Hernandez said, is great — the club opened in 2007 with about 150 members. BGCNP now serves over 400 youth in Flandreau alone.
The addition including a new full-court gymnasium and program area, would be built on the gravel area of the parking lot, southeast of the current location.
Nicholas McBenim and Hailey Adams, also with the local club, shared that the proposed expansion would be available for community use when the Club isn’t utilizing the space. The public is being asked to attend one of two town hall meetings scheduled for January 5th and January 26th to learn more about the project.
