The Flandreau School Board held brief discussion on the 2025-26 Capital Outlay and General Fund budgets and class sizes at their regular monthly meeting, Monday, March 10.
Under new business, the board looked at a very preliminary budget for both funds.
Some of the higher priced items on the Capital Outlay list were the new roof for the high school gym, which has let out for bids with bid opening on April 9. Also included was a new sound system for the high school gym, lighting in the high school, cabinets in the art room and new athletic uniforms as well as classroom items teachers would like to have in their rooms.
Supt. Rick Weber reminded the board that the list is not set in stone and it includes “some wants, not needs,” indicating these items would not necessarily all be purchased.
Board members were made aware of elementary and middle school classroom numbers for the 2025-26 school year. Fourth grade currently has two teachers (47 students) and the incoming class has 54. Weber indicated that by approving the hiring of a teacher now, he can get the ball rolling and hire early.
After a brief discussion, the board approved to hire another fourth grade teacher. They also will hold a special meeting on March 31 to further discuss class size numbers and will also complete the yearly teacher evaluations at this time.
Elementary Principal Baylee Relf reported to the board on the Early Learner Screening held in early March. One of the days was cut short due to the weather, but there were 31 kindergarten aged children screened and four children screened for Child Find. There are still five children remaining to go through the screening.
No election will take place for the three open board positions. Incumbents Kari Burggraff and Dustin Headrick both filed petitions for the three-year terms and Brian Johnson filed for the two-year term.
The board accepted the resignations of Lori Williams and Josh Cleveland as girls and boys junior high basketball coaches and Patrina Mulder as elementary secretary effective May 16.
They also approved Robert Lack as the Driver’s Education classroom and driving instructor and set his wage at $32 per hour. The class will be held May 27 to June 5 with driving taking place over the summer. Costs for the students will not increase and will remain at $300 each.
Approval was also given to open the Athletic Director position to replace the retiring Weber. Other than his superintendent duties, Weber has been the AD for many years.
Important dates to note: K-8 Reading & Math Night is March 27 from 6-7:30 pm, Kindergarten Round-Up is May 2 and Third Grade Poetry Night is May 6.
