Thirteen flags flying throughout the downtown has grown to nearly 100 in the small rural town, and the American Legion is inviting you to join them as they expand Flag Day celebrations this year to include an extended program featuring musical guests, food trucks, and unique drive down what is being called the Avenue of Flags.
Festivities are scheduled to kick off at 5:30 p.m. with the 147th National Guard Band group, FBR (Full Battle Rattle).
At 6:30 p.m., Carter Schmidt will lead a Dedication of Flags program with Pastor Alan Blankenfeld offering the prayer. Music will also be provided from Rachel and Rebecca Heinemann, along with a special Avenue of Flags video.
Representatives from the South Dakota American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs, and other dignitaries, will be present for the presentation of the charter for the newly organized Sons of the American Legion Squadron.
Guests are encouraged to also explore the Avenue of Flags on a golf cart provided by Wheel City of Sioux Falls.
“It’s a wonderful way to experience the patriotic display and learn the stories behind each flag,” said Bonnie Hemmer, one of the organizers of this year’s event.
BlueJays will be open along with several food trucks in the area. Capping off the event will be a flyover by Riggins Flight Service at 7:45 p.m., followed by live music from Broken Oak, playing from 8:30 until midnight at BlueJays.
