Young person charged in post office crime

A juvenile has been charged in the Flandreau Post Office break-in earlier this year.
The young person faces a felony burglary charge and misdemeanor charges of theft, intentional damage to property and contributing to the delinquency of minors in Moody County. The Flandreau youth is the only one charged in the crime so far and is described as the leader of the three juveniles who originally confessed to the post office break-in in January.

Because the person is under age 18, the identity is not released, and the individual can’t face federal charges as a juvenile.
A postal inspection investigation of the crime determined that after entering the post office when it was closed, the three youth took items from the mail. An employee discovered the break-in after arriving at work the morning after the crime and called police.
The young people were not arrested and were released to their parents after making a confession. None of their ages were disclosed.
The post office was closed for several hours after the break-in while the crime was investigated, and postal hours for customer boxes have changed as a result of the incident.
