The dangers of ice dams

Posted

Local insurance companies are warning homeowners that with all of the snow we’ve had, to clear your roofs of excessive snow, and to watch for the formation of ice dams on your eaves.
Heavy snow piled high has caused some damage to structures in the area, according to two local agents the Moody County Enterprise spoke with in recent weeks. The concern is for any buildings that may be compromised, any additional weight that may come yet this winter through additional precipitation will cause further collapses.
Any melting of the accumulated snow that we already do have, and then refreezing could also have ice dams forming on your roofline. The dams can then have water backing up into your home, causing damage that may not show until a later time.
Experts recommend if you haven’t already, that you remove at least three feet of snow from the edges to prevent ice damming and otherwise call a professional immediately if you notice water backing up into your attic or home.
