Northern State University in Aberdeen released the dean’s list for the spring 2017 semester. Among those listed is Joseph Parsley of Flandreau.
Eli Typhina graduated on May 13, 2017, from North Carolina State University in Raleigh with a doctoral degree in Communication, Rhetoric and Digital Media.
Dr. Typhina is the daughter of Joe and Mary Schwebach, and the granddaughter of Elmer and Betty Hinricher and Rosie Schwebach of Flandreau. She is a 2001 graduate of Flandreau High School.
Typhina's doctoral dissertation examined the history and current uses of mobile phones for conservation and sustainability efforts.
As part of her research, she developed a prototype mobile phone application that assists North Carolina tree farmers in sustainable forestry practices and building a network of peer farmers, extension agents and U.S. Forest Service Rangers.
Upon graduation, Typhina started as a research scholar for the U.S. National Security Agency at an advanced research laboratory in Raleigh, N.C. The laboratory includes government, industry and academic researchers working together to develop computer programs for gathering counterintelligence and assisting political leaders in making military decisions.
Typhina conducts research and advises lab members in the use of social and behavioral technics that improve the lab's products and functioning.
