Shawn A. Shortman Sr., 47, of Flandreau, SD, passed away on Thursday, January 13, 2022 at Avera McKennan Hospital.
He was born in Havre, MT to Darlyne M. Shortman and Frank Iron Shooter.  Shawn was a member of the Fort Belknap Indian Community; Gros Ventre (Aaniiih).  As a child he lived in Fort Belknap, Missoula, California and Washington.  He was primarily raised on the Flathead Indian Reservation, MT, where he attended Two Eagle River School. Here he made many lifelong friends that he often talked about with his family and friends. In 1997, Shawn moved to Flandreau, SD.  He married his wife, Elizabeth (Montgomery) Shortman, on August 13, 1997, in the middle of the basketball court in which they met, known as Duncan Park.  Shawn worked in and around Flandreau up until the time of his death including: the Royal River Casino, First American Mart, Prairie Junction, Daktronics and Tractor Supply.   Shawn’s hobbies were open gym basketball, listening to heavy metal music, attending concerts, gaming, watching horror movies, being a WWE fan, hunting and trapping.  He most liked to talk trash, say things to others for shock value and when the time called for it, tell it like it was.  Though he had a hard exterior of tattoos, piercings and heavy metal shirts, he won most people over with his outspoken personality.  Shawn was definitely “one of a kind” and will be missed by many family and friends.
Shawn is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Shortman, Flandreau; his children: Isaiah James, Livingston, ND; Jordan Zollie, Flandreau; Dalyn Noah, Sioux Falls, SD; Justis Andrew, Brookings, SD; Shawn August Jr., Veronica Erin, and Jake Wyatt, all of Flandreau; two sisters Diane (Eric) Higley, Heyburn, ID; Birdie (Loren) Ukestine, Sioux Falls and his brother Shelby (Jennifer) Shortman, Flandreau.  Shawn is survived by 7 grandchildren, many aunts, one uncle and many cousins.  Shawn was preceded in death by his mother, Darlyne Shortman; his nephew raised as his brother, Vincent Pablo; his cousin Winona “Winnie” Williams; his father, Frank Iron Shooter; grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins.
His funeral service was held Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at Wicoicaga Otipi Community Center, Flandreau.
