Sesquicentennial planning has begun

The initial informational meeting for the 150th anniversary celebration of Flandreau to be in 2019 was held on Thursday, April 20, at the city office.

Those in attendance, about a dozen folks with broad representation of the community, came from the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe, Flandreau Public Schools and the Riverside Park Days committee.

They researched and went through a number of different things to consider having during the five-day span of the celebration, including carnivals, rodeos and parades.

Dan Sutton said they are hoping to work in conjunction with the all-school reunion committee in organizing certain events as well. Historically, Flandreau holds an all-school reunion every 10 years in the years ending in “9.”

Any local businesses interested in helping with events during the sesquicentennial celebration are encouraged to contact Sutton at 864-1477 or attend the next meeting.

Sutton said the next meeting will probably be in June or July depending on what they hear back about getting a carnival. All are welcome to attend future meetings.
