Flandreau’s second biggest summer celebration this year starts this week with the Moody County Fair.
Open class exhibits are due today, Wednesday, and 4-H contests begin tomorrow at the fairgrounds. Thursday also includes a 6 p.m. parade with the theme, “Rounding Up the Memories,” and a pork loin feed from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the fairgrounds. Cost is $6.
The parade route will begin at the bottom of the hill north of the Moody County Museum and continue down Second Avenue to 12th Street, ending at the Moody County Resource Center.
After the meal, the Flandreau Development Corporation will give away free ice cream and the city band will perform a 7 p.m. concert.
On Friday, the Fair Board will sponsor a free community meal at 6 p.m. west of the grandstand.
Toilet bowl races start at 7 p.m. in the Flandreau High School parking lot with best of show and best of design prizes for two categories: 16 and younger and 17 and older.
On Saturday, children can participate in a small animal pet show and Junior Ag Olympics. The pet show is open to children ages 3 to 7, beginning at 12:15 p.m. at the Wally Koester Pavilion. All pets must be in a cage or on a leash. Children will be asked questions about their pet, such as the pet’s name and what it eats. The junior Olympics, also for children ages 3 to 7 will give participants an opportunity to participate in a variety of events.
During the fair, open class and 4-H exhibits will be on display in the armory.
