Running ramps up over week’s action

The Fliers were at the Arlington Cross Country meet on Monday, Sept. 12 while the varsity traveled to Huron last Saturday and the JV team stayed home to participate in the inaugural Goodeagle Invitational held at the Flandreau Indian School.

The Flier boys were first and the girls second at the Arlington Invitational. Flandreau’s low boys’ score was 19 with Baltic and the host Cardinals tying for second with 29 points. Sanborn Central/Woonsocket and Howard tied for fourth with 55 points.
Top Flier male runner was Tanner Reed with a fourth place time of 18:12.89. Lurick Dailey was seventh at 18:32.57 and Brenton Westberry was eighth with a time of 18:36.19. Junior Matthew Gassman came in 12th in a time of 19:34.64 and Lanz Dailey took 18th, 20:18.23.
Flandreau was edged by Sioux Valley, 12-16 for the team title. Medalist was the Cossack’s Isabelle Bloker, 18:47.99.
The Flier girls’ team was led by Faith Wiese’s second place time of 20:00.60 and Kiley Westberry’s time of 21:19.48 for fourth place. Next Flier in the chute was Diamond Roy with her 13th place, 22:23.21 and then Hailey Lahr was 23rd, 24:08.891

Flandreau took some varsity runners only to the Clyde Cotton Invitational in Huron last Saturday.
Top Flier runners were Faith Wiese, 12th for the girls’ team (19:49.16) and Tanner Reed’s 67th place time of 18:51.32. There were 113 runners in the varsity girls race and 130 in the boys’. Most schools in the meet were in Class AA.

Saturday, FIS hosted the inaugural Goodeagle Invitational on the school’s course.
Since the Fliers had sent their varsity runners to Huron, the JV had their turn to shine and ran as varsity in the 5000 meter race.
There were 55 runners in the four races held under ideal cross country running weather.
Mason Brushbreaker was the top Flier runner coming in with a time of 21:53.1 for eighth place. He was followed by Wyatt Kontz in ninth place, Teague Bergjord 10th and Daniel Hobbie, 11th.
For the Flandreau Indians, Genio White Hawk was fifth, 20:27.7 and Malik Longie was sixth, 20:59.2. Amos Rockman came in 13th.
In the varsity girls, Karissa Nolan was seventh and Katherine Kulm came in eighth.
The JV runners saw Nora Hamilton win the 5,000 meter JV race in a time of 16:20.1. Rianna Red Bear was second, Isabel Kulm was third, Emma Keith, fifth and Marlene Burshiem, eighth.
For the JV boys, Nathaniel Hobbie was the medalist with a time of 13:44.2 and Kenton James was second. Logan Kontz took third, Jake Hamilton fifth and Sam Schmidt, eighth. Other runners were Owen Kelm, Justin Haugen and Creighton Arnett coming in 10th through 12th.
This week, the Fliers are in the Clark Invitational on Thursday and at Volga for the Sioux Valley Invite next Tuesday.
