Post Office lobby hours change after break-in

Posted

Flandreau Post Office lobby hours to pick up mail have been reduced after the recent break-in.
Lobby hours for people to access their postal boxes are 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. The area will be closed on Sundays. Previously, the outer area was open 24 hours a day. The change started Jan. 12.
“Obviously, the 24-hour lobby made it convenient for customers to access their mail,” said Heidi Austreim, postmaster. “Times have changed and due to the recent incident, we’re required to go this route for the time being.”

Three juveniles admitted to breaking in to the Post Office and taking items from packages earlier this month. An employee discovered the break-in after arriving at work the morning of Jan. 4 and called police. The U.S. Postal Inspector’s office was in charge of the investigation and said juveniles aren’t typically charged with federal postal crimes.
The young people who admitted to the break-in were not arrested and were turned over to their parents. Their ages were not disclosed.
The packages that were opened during the incident have been returned to their owners, Austreim said.
