The City of Flandreau is getting some overdue upgrades to its electric substation.
City officials want to let residents know that next week on Tuesday, September 19th from 1:45-6 a.m., there will be a power outage city-wide while those repairs are made.
Residents are also encouraged to sign up for a service called CodeRed, an electronic emergency notification system that allows public safety officials to notify you of emergencies. Alerts would come either via a phone call, text message, or email.

Other updates from the last regular meeting of the Flandreau City Council:
Work on the new Fire Station continues at a rapid pace. Structural beams are now in place that offer a glimpse into the overall size of the actual structure. Crews are working long hours, including weekends, to see that the project stays on schedule. As that work progresses, the City Infrastructure and Services Committee is also working on an updated fire protection contract with the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe.
Another potential city project that has been sidelined for at least the past 12 months is the Flandreau Dam and the area around it. City Administrator Cohl Turnquist said that after a hiatus in conversations about what to do, if anything, with the dam itself as far as safety concerns and Mayor Dan Sutton among others would like to see the area around it developed for recreation use. The idea is make the area around it more usable and attractive to visitors.
Several area residents have approached him about resuming talks. He plans to reconnect with officials from Game, Fish & Parks and the Army Corps of Engineers, among others from the community interested in the project, to again look at what’s possible for the area.
Mayor Dan Sutton is working with former members of the Cemetery Committee to see who would be interested in helping to oversee perpetual care of headstones of which family members are unable to be located.
Sutton and Turnquist plan to meet with representatives from FEMA and the county about changes to the flood mapping.
The First Reading of Ordinance 615, which is the 2024 Appropriation Ordinance (budget for the coming year), was held. A few recent changes were highlighted and an additional change was made to increase funds for the Aquatic Center Department, from $15,000 to $25,000 to allow for further improvements in 2024.
The Second Reading is scheduled to take place at the next regular council meeting on September 18th, 2023. The 2024 Proposed Budget can be viewed at the City’s website.
The meeting on the 18th will start at 6 due to Homecoming activities at Flandreau High School.
