Myrtle M. Sass, of Garretson, SD, age 93, passed away, Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at Dells Nursing and Rehab Center, Dell Rapids, SD.

Myrtle Mae was born 5 minutes after her identical twin sister Mildred, to August and Hortense (Conrad) Peterson on December 29, 1923 on the family farm north of Jasper, MN. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Jasper and graduated from District 53 and Pipestone High School. On December 29, 1943, she was united in marriage to Delbert “Red” Sass and they farmed most of their lives near Sherman and Garretson, SD. They retired from farming and moved into Garretson in 1977 where they continued to be a very active part of the community. They were members of the Church of Christ of Garretson, Red served as janitor/carpenter and Myrt was active in church and community womens’ groups. Myrtle was an amazing cook, baker and seamstress, she also enjoyed gardening, traveling, coffee with friends and family gatherings with her large extended family. She loved animals, especially her favorite cat Nuisance. Later, she worked as a nurses’ aide at the Palisade Nursing Home until her late 70’s and was honored as Employee of the Month.

Myrtle is lovingly remembered by her three sisters: Juanita Johnston, Overland Park, KS, Irene Schalow, Pipestone, MN and Bernice Alexander, Alexandria, VA; and 35 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Delbert in 2005, her parents, 4 sisters, Eloise Mitchell, Dorothy Weets, Irma Gehrels and identical twin sister Mildred Witte; one brother, Carl Peterson, two nieces Beverly and Barbara Schalow, nephews Don, Doug and Ken Mitchell, Bob Schalow and Gary Weets.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 28, 2017 at United Church of Garretson with burial in Rosendal Cemetery, Sherman, SD. www.skrochfc.com
