Memorial Day Services planned
Services of remembrance will be held in several Moody County communities on May 27.
Flandreau’s Memorial Day service will be at 11 a.m. at the Veteran’s memorial at the cemetery, followed by a potluck at the community center.
Captain Chad Carlson, company commander of the 1742nd Transportation Company, will be the keynote speaker. The 1742nd is headquartered in Sioux Falls with its detachment in Flandreau.
Carlson, who lives in Rapid City, also is the South Dakota Employer Support of the National Guard and Reserve’s program director. He has served once in Afghanistan.
Volunteers are needed starting at 7 a.m. to put flags up at the cemetery.
A ceremony in Egan will begin at 9 a.m. at Veteran’s Memorial Park, and Colman’s will follow at 10:30 a.m. at the Colman Cemetery.
Principal Scott Hemmer of the Colman-Egan School will speak at both programs, which will include music by the Colman-Egan High School band under the direction of Rhonda Palmlund Olson.
In case of rain, the Egan program will be held at the United Methodist Church. Refreshments will be served at the Senior Citizen Center following the ceremony.
At Trent, the Memorial Day schedule is as follows: 8:30 am Naval Service at Bridge, then at 9 am will be the Memorial Service with speaker Ben Uhlich at Trent Gym. Following that, there will be 10 am services at Trent Cemetery, then 10:30 am services at Salem Cemetery, 11 am at Oslo and Bethania Cemeteries concluding with 11:30 am services at Nelson and Riverview Cemeteries.
