Maxine M. Burrell, age 93, of Madison, died on Friday, June 1, 2018 at the Bethel Lutheran Home with family at her side.

Maxine Matilda Ahrendt was born to William and Elsie (Dean) Ahrendt on the family farm near Meckling, SD on March 25, 1925. Maxine was the 5th child of 10 children. She attended grade school in Meckling and High School in Elk Point, SD. After graduation, she went to California for a while and lived with her sister. She met her future husband, George Burrell at a carnival in Elk Point and was married at her sister-in-law’s home on January 12, 1945 while George was on leave from the Army.

Maxine was active in The United Methodist Church and on the American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries in Madison. Maxine was a homemaker most of her life raising 5 children. She worked at Hardee’s in Madison making the best darn biscuits and at Lincoln Grade School as a lunchroom hostess. She was a favorite amongst the children. Maxine enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, canning, gardening, and camping. For 10 winters, George and Maxine pulled their 5th wheel camper to Yuma, Arizona. Maxine was often requested to bake her famous sour cream raisin pie for many occasions. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much.

Maxine is survived by two sons, Greg Burrell of Fruita, CO and Keith Burrell of Emmetsburg, IA; three daughters, Cynthia Burrell of Sioux Falls, SD, Paula (Eddy) Ullom of Madison, SD, and Carol (Rick) Lewis of Springfield, MO; 14 Grandchildren; 17 Great-Grandchildren; one brother, Russell (Kaye) Ahrendt of Sergeant Bluff, IA; two sisters, Lois Nelson of Sacramento, CA and Marian Zambon of Rapid City, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George, three sisters, Dorothy Bruce, Carole Nuss & Clara Burrell; three brothers, Don, Leo and Ronnie and family friend, Jackie Foross.

Funeral service will be 1:30 PM on Wednesday, June 6th at the United Methodist Church, Madison with Rev. Barry Whipkey officiating. Visitation will continue from 12:30-1:30 PM on Wednesday at the church.  Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.  www.weilandfuneralchapel.com.
