Mat season closes at State B

RAPID CITY – Three Fliers competed in the Class B State Boys’ Wrestling Tournament at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
Tathan Headrick went 1-2 at 152 pounds, Brayden Wiese (106 pounds) and Kolby Peters (170) both went 0-2.
“I thought our boys performed well in what is obviously an extremely tough tournament,” said Genzlinger.
“I think we had a few nerves in our first matches as it was all their first matches ever at state.”
In the opening round, all three Fliers lost by fall. Brayden Wiese lost to the eventual 106 pound state champion, Kasen Konstanz of Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes. At 152, Tathan Headrick lost to Sioux Valley’s Russell Sheets and at 170, Kolby Peters lost to Hot Springs’ Caleb Rickenbach, who moved on to take third.

“Second round went better with Tathan winning his match by fall,” Genzlinger said.
Headrick pinned Lyman County’s Rory McManus in 2:15, but then was pinned by Howard’s John Callies to end his tourney action.
In the second round, Wiese lost 7-0 to Gannon Gilligan of Kingsbury County and Peters lost a 5-1 decision to Cade Grocott of McCook Central/Montrose.
“Kolby lost a close decision to an opponent who pinned him last week and Brayden wrestled two kids that placed in the top 6 at the weight. He competed well against both.”
“(I) Love the growth of the team and program,” said Genzlinger.
“Can’t wait to hit the ground running this off season with lifts and summer camps and see how much we improve going into next season,” he concluded.
