Marilyn E. Rice

Marilyn E. Rice, age 89 of Brookings SD passed away at the home of her daughter, Jody (Jack) Lundie on Lake Madison on June 7, 2018. 

Marilyn Eva Cook was born August 31, 1928 in Bruce SD to Chester and Hilma (Kemp) Cook. She graduated from Bruce High School in 1946.  After attending General Beadle State College, Marilyn taught in several country schools.  On January 2, 1949 Marilyn was married to Calvin R Krulish and they had three children; Daniel, Mary and Jody.  After living in California, Pierre SD, Northern Minnesota and Toronto SD, the family moved to Brookings SD where they lived until 1972.  In 1972 Marilyn moved to Flandreau SD where she met James (Jiggs) Rice.  They were married on February 2, 1973.  Marilyn and Jiggs made their home on a farm by Ward SD until moving to the Cook family farm on 1976 by Bruce SD.   In 1993 Marilyn and Jiggs moved to Brookings SD where she lived until 2018.  Marilyn wore many hats during her lifetime. She cooked at several restaurants in Brookings and managed the Woolworth lunch counter where she guarded their famous cheesecake recipe. Marilyn sold life insurance for several years, owned a tavern, was a florist, and taught floral design.  Marilyn also was an administrator of Park View Nursing Home in Volga.  She loved flowers and her yard and gardens were always full of beautiful color.  Marilyn was a member of the First Reformed Church in Volga SD where she was a member of the Ladies Aid.  The church often had flowers arrangements for special occasions that she had created. Marilyn was active in the Historical Club and several bible study groups.  She loved the Lord and most of all she loved her grandchildren. 
 Marilyn is survived by her children: Daniel (Lynda) Krulish, Lonsdale MN, Mary Bakker, Sioux Falls SD, and Jody (Jack) Lundie, Lake Madison SD;  three step-children: Michael (Jeani), Webster SD, Jeffory (Lori), Brookings SD and Timothy (Robin) Volga SD; eight grandchildren: Kristina Feldmann, St Paul MN, Jason Krulish, Custer SD, Elizabeth (Troy) Morris, St Paul MN, David (Shauna) Krulish, St Francis MN, Melissa (Steve) Hamlin, Red Wing MN, Jeremiah (Lana) Mount, Overland Park KS, Jacob (Carrie) Lundie, Flagstaff AZ and Murphy (Janine) Portland OR; 9 step-grandchildren,;10 great grandchildren; 16 step-great grandchildren and 5 step-great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by a special niece Cheryl Glazier and many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. 

Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband James Rice and her sisters: Glenes Peter, Mavis Bruflat, and Ardyth Showers. 
 
Celebration of Life service was held Sunday, June 10, 2018 at First Reformed Church, Volga SD with burial in Elmwood Cemetery, Bruce.  www.skrochfc.com
