Joanne M. Olson

Joanne M. Olson, age 81, of BJoanne M. Olson, 81, Brookings, SD, passed away Monday, February 15, 2021 at her home.
Joanne was born in Dell Rapids, SD on March 10, 1939 to Leon and Pansy (Duncan) Bachman. She grew up on the family farm near Egan, acquiring practical life skills and learning the value of hard work at a young age. Her humble beginnings meant they did not have much as a family, but they always had each other. She began her education in Sioux Falls, and then Egan where she met Gerald “Jerry” Olson. They were married on September 1, 1961 at Lone Rock Lutheran Church in rural Flandreau. Joanne went to bible college, before attending Wessington Springs Jr. College and Sioux Falls College. She taught in two country schools. When her children were born, she became a homemaker. After Jerry started his cattle-buying and trucking business, Joanne assisted him as a secretary. For a few years, she worked at Flandreau Public School as a teacher’s aide and then Riverview Manor. Joanne and Jerry moved to Brookings in 1998, managing the apartment building at which they resided. Joanne became an Activity Coordinator for Brookview Manor, retiring after 10 years of service.
While in Flandreau, Joanne was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, and was a current member and faithful volunteer at Grace Point Wesleyan Church in Brookings. Joanne enjoyed the company of four different coffee groups, was a member of the Extension Club, directed Weight-Watchers meetings, and announced the Flandreau News on KBRK Radio. She touched many hearts with her thoughtfulness and caring gestures. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Joanne has made and donated over 400 masks, and has crotchet and quilted many gifts for others over the years. Her other hobbies include fishing, baking, and always lending a hand.
Joanne is survived by her daughters: Carla (Dean) Harris, Flandreau, SD; and Claudia (Keith) Tofte, Volga, SD; five grandchildren: Nicole, Tanner, Brittany, Amber, and Tyler; 10 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Dennis Bachman, Sioux Falls, SD.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald “Jerry” Olson in 2007; her parents, Leon and Pansy; and her sister, Judy Babcock.
Her funeral service was held Thursday, February 18, 2021 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Flandreau. Burial at Lone Rock Cemetery, rural Flandreau.
