James A. Broghammer, age 87, Colman, SD, passed away Monday, April 23, 2018 at the Madison Care and Rehabilitation Center, Madison, SD.
James Broghammer was born on August 29, 1930 in Dell Rapids, SD, the son of Joseph Victor and Anna M. (Wallace) Broghammer. He attended school through the 10th grade in Dell Rapids. He completed one semester in Chester before completing his schooling and graduating from Colman. He served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged after two years. He was united in marriage to Patricia Webber on September 7, 1959 in Sioux Falls and to this union five children were born, Roger, Terry, Doug, Donald and Sharon. Jim farmed in the Colman area until 1982. He went to work at T & R Electric and was a maintenance foreman. James also had his own business of heating sheet metal for many years. James was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Colman, and served on the church council. He was a 60 plus year member of the Colman American Legion where he served as adjutant for many years and received many go-getter medals. He also served on the draft board, Colman city council and Colman school board.
Jim is survived by his wife: Pat; five children: Roger (Shelly), Colman, Doug (Kim), New Berlin, NY, Don (Christine), Rapid City, Sharon Broghammer, Mitchell, and Bruce (Valerie) Heyer, Andover, MN; 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, seven siblings: Robert (Dorothy) Broghammer, JoAnn Carpenter, Phyllis (Jack) Conway, Mary (Stan) Votek, Clare Fink, Steve (Judy) Broghammer, Georgia (Bob) Race and many nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his son Terry, his parents, brother Chuck and sister Carmel.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, April 26, 2018 at St. Peter Catholic Church, Colman, with burial in the church cemetery.
