It’s almost time for the Moody County Fair

Posted

The Moody County Fair kicks off 6 p.m. July 25 with its traditional parade down Second Avenue. This year’s theme is “Rounding Up the Memories.”
The parade route begins at the bottom of the hill just north of the Moody County Museum, runs down Second Avenue to 12th Street, ending at the Moody County Resource Center. The evening also will include a pork loin feed from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the fairgrounds. Cost is $6 for a sandwich, beans, chips and a drink. Additional sandwiches are $3. The Flandreau Development Corporation also will give away free ice cream at the event.
The city band will perform a concert at 7 p.m. north of the community center.
Line-up for the parade begins at 5:30 p.m. and there will be a check-in table at the museum corner. Parade organizers ask that parade participants have someone drop them off at the parade area and park vehicles at the high school parking lot.  Horse riders are asked to do the same to eliminate congestion and parking problems in the parade line-up area.
Parade entries are judged as they pass by First National Bank and cash awards will be given in the following categories: Best Depicting Theme, Most Beautiful, Most Original, Best Hitch, Best Horse and Rider, Best Youth Entry, Vintage Vehicle, Vintage Tractor, Most Humorous and Judges’ Choice.
All parade entries should be received at the extension office by 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 24.  Entries received after that time will be added to the end of the parade.

Other activities for the fair are a kids’ tractor pull at 7 p.m. July 25 at the fair grandstand. The event is open to youth ages 4 to 11, with medals and ribbons in each age division. Registration is at 6:30 p.m.
On Friday, July 26, the Fair Board will sponsor a free community meal at 6 p.m. west of the grandstand.
Toilet bowl races start at 7 p.m. in the Flandreau High School parking lot with best of show and best of design prizes for two categories: 16 and younger and 17 and older.
For more information, call Marc Burggraff at 864-1571.
On Saturday, July 27, there will be a small animal pet show and Junior Ag Olympics. The pet show is open to children ages 3 to 7, beginning at 12:15 p.m. at the Wally Koester Pavilion. All pets must be in a cage or on a leash. Children will be asked questions about their pet, such as the pet’s name and what it eats. The junior Olympics, also for children ages 3 to 7 will give participants an opportunity to participate in a variety of events.
During the fair, open class and 4-H exhibits will be on display.
Participants with open class exhibits can start filling out cards July 22 and 23 at the extension office, which will be open until 6 p.m.
Open class exhibits will be entered from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on July 24 for judging at the William Janklow Community Center. Exhibits will be on display at the fair through noon July 27.
Participants may enter up to four entries per lot for work they completed during the last two years. There is no cost to enter and tags will also be available at registration.
Those who are under age 18 as of July 24 will be judged in the junior division.
4-H exhibits will be entered from 4 to 7:30 p.m. July 24. Several livestock shows also will be held during the fair.
