High honors for music students

Drew Bamba receives high honors with the Directors Excellence Awards from choral director Lori Kneebone. This past weeks concerts was the last for Kneebone as she will start her new position as Flandreau City Finance Officer.

Some big honors for seniors Drew Bamba, Matthew Drietz and Austin Kulm this past week at the 2022 High School Choir, Band and Jazz Band concert.
All three were awarded music booster scholarships.
Bamba was also awarded the Director’s Excellence Award. He plans to continue to sing at South Dakota State University next fall. Both he and Austin Kulm are four year members of the All State Chorus, “and have put in countless hours with the FHS music department,” said choral director Lori Kneebone.
Kulm was awarded the National School Choral Award and the Louis Armstrong Jazz award, which honors an outstanding jazz musician at each high school. Kulm however, was not in attendance as he was at practice for the All State Jazz Band performance. The trombone player has been selected the past three years now for the All State band and is the first player to attend from Flandreau since band director Pat Weight took over at the high school.
Drietz was awarded The Sousa Award, which is considered the pinnacle of achievement in a high school band. The award has been given to one student each year since 1955 to honor superior musicianship and outstanding dedication.
