Hazel Poverud, 98, of Flandreau, S.D. passed away on Friday, May 19, 2017 at Riverview Healthcare Community.

Hazel Irene Paulson was born August 1, 1918, at home northwest of Flandreau, S.D. to Olaf and Carrie (Iverson) Paulson. She had four siblings, Palmer, Mable, Alvin and Bernice. She attended country school for elementary grades and graduated in 1936 from Egan High School in Egan, S.D. She graduated from General Beadle Teachers College in Madison, S.D., in 1938, as she loved children. She was united in marriage to Eivend Poverud on February 24, 1947 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Flandreau, S.D. She taught school in Egan, S.D. and Glendale Township School in rural Napoleon, N.D. They were blessed with a daughter, Dianne. They lived on the family farm in rural Napoleon for about eight years before moving to Pico Rivera, Calif. in September 1955. In 1957, they purchased their first home in La Puente, Calif. where Hazel lived and worked, at W.T. Grant Co. as a bookkeeper until her retirement in 1980. Eivend died on September 19, 1979. In 1985, she moved back to Flandreau to be near her sisters, Mable and Bernice. The “Paulson Girls,” as they were called, were together almost every day for about 20 years in their later years.

Hazel was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. She enjoyed the company of many friends and neighbors. Many lifelong friends were met through church. Growing up she attended Midway Lutheran Church, Clare Lutheran Church and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. She was a charter member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church for 30 years. She was a Sunday school teacher and active in Ladies Aid. She was a woman of faith who loved her family, showing kindness, gentleness, honesty and integrity in all aspects of her life. On September 9, 2011, Hazel moved to Riverview Manor in Flandreau, where she was lovingly cared for by the staff until her death on May 19, 2017.

Hazel was preceded in death her husband, Eivend; siblings, Palmer, Mable, Alvin (Joyce) and Bernice; son-in-law, Larry Staggs; sister-in-law, Ruby (Frank) Marquart; niece, Susan Marquart and many aunts, uncles and cousins

Hazel is survived by her daughter, Dianne Staggs and son-in-law, John Hess and family of Flandreau; three grandsons, Jason Staggs of Culleoka, Tenn., Justin (Careyna) Staggs of Crossville, Tenn., and Joshua (Heather) Staggs of DuPont, Wash.; seven great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Quincy, Jacob, Mackenzie, Keeley Staggs and Othniel and Jasek Cooper; four nieces, Lynda Foote of Magnolia, Texas, Kay Schan of Magnolia, Texas, Paula (Carey) Hite of Columbia, S.C., and Jill Brown of Sun City, Ariz.; and four nephews, Jack Marquart of Bismarck, N.D., Bill Marquart of Okla., Pat Marquart of Hawaii, and Scott Marquart of Mandan, N.D.

Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Flandreau. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church. Skroch Funeral Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
