Flandreau residents can spend a lot of time on two wheels next week with biking events that are encouraging people to get active.
Bike week kicks off May 14 with a simulated bike lane on Pipestone Avenue and a bike rodeo nearby on the Moody County Courthouse lawn. Adults and children are asked to ride their bikes to the event to be entered into prize drawings for bicycles, helmets and bike swag. The event will be from 5 to 7 p.m. and will include Big Bear BBQ’s food truck with items for purchase.
On May 15, a group of riders will go to lunch together in an event called Pizza and Pedals starting at 11 a.m. at the West End Plaza. After a short ride, the group will eat lunch at the Royal River Casino and ride back to the plaza together.

The following day, children and adults can bike to school together, starting at 7:45 a.m. with a breakfast snack at the hospital parking lot. Police will be on hand to make sure the group gets safely to school on their bikes.
The final events for bike week is coffee and long johns at the downtown park next to First National Bank on May 17. Riders can meet between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. for the morning social time.
Tour de Flandreau will begin at 5 p.m. that evening starting at the West End Plaza. Riders will visit a handful of businesses during the tour, learning more about each one. “It gives people an opportunity to go into new businesses and discover what they offer,” said Kelley Ramsdell, a committee member working on the event.
The committee, established through the Healthy Hometown initiative, is raising awareness for a planned bike lane that would connect the west side of Flandreau with the city park on the east.
