Gilbert W. Warner

Gilbert W. Warner, 92, of Flandreau, SD passed away Thursday, January 6, 2022, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Gilbert was born November 12, 1929, on a farm southeast of Larchwood, IA to John and Mabel (Groth) Warner. He went to a country school for eight years and graduated in 1948 from Lester High School in Lester, IA. Gilbert worked on farms around Larchwood until 1951 when he joined the Naval Reserve in Sioux Falls. He married Charlotte Serck on August 17, 1952, at Lester, IA. They started farming east of Flandreau in 1953 and they moved to town in 1983. After retiring in 1992, they wintered in Arizona for 14 years. Gilbert enjoyed playing cards with his friends in Arizona, dancing all his life and had coffee at the Flandreau Bakery for years. Gilbert was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.

Gilbert is survived by his wife Charlotte; daughter Donna (Richard) Strange, Sioux Falls; two sons, Alan (Irene) Warner, Gene Warner (friend Barbara Hart), both of Flandreau; eight grandchildren, Erin Strange, Dawn Strange, Kymberly (Byron) Ochoa, Miriam (Nicholas) Schultz, Daniel (Hannah) Warner, Kellie (Matthew) Schelhaas, Ryan (Jessica) Warner, Lindsay Warner (friend Brandon Lawrence); and nine great-grandchildren, Evangelyn, Esther and Nathan Schultz; Samual and Oliver Schelhaas; Elizabeth and Juliann Ochoa; Harper and Weston Warner; and two more on the way. Gilbert was preceded by his parents and a brother Earl and his wife Laura.   

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Friday, January 14, 2022, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Flandreau, with burial in Union Cemetery. Visitation 4:00 – 7:00 pm Thursday with a 7:00 pm prayer service at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau.
