Fliers stay competitive at big Wagner Tourney

WAGNER – Windom-Mountain Lake (Minn.) scored 190 points to win the team title at Saturday’s Wagner Invitational.
The host Red Raiders were second with 147 points.
Flandreau totaled 24.5 points to finish 15th as a team.
Braden Peters led the Fliers with a fifth-place performance at 285 pounds. The sophomore won by fall in 25 seconds over Jace Wurth of Beresford/Alcester-Hudson in the fifth-place match. Peters opened the tournament with a win by fall in 2:00 over Austin Severson of Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes, but lost by fall in 2:30 to Wagner’s Dawson Lensing to drop to the consolation bracket. Peters lost by fall in 1:53 to Eli Mutz of Windom-Mountain Lake to drop to the fifth-place match.
Hunter Witte (113) and Caleb Dietrich (132) posted 2-2 marks.

Witte opened with a 4-1 decision over Tri-Valley’s Aerin Geary, but then dropped a 12-4 major decision to Chase Varilek of KWLPG. Witte bounced back with a 10-2 major decision win over Windom-Mountain Lake’s Bobby Saengosoth, but was eliminated after losing by fall in 48 seconds to Griffin Tobin of Mt. Vernon/Plankinton/Corsica-Stickney.
Dietrich posted a 17-1 win by technical fall in 5:05 over Garretson’s Isaiah Robinson, but then lost by fall in 3:00 to Logan Serck of BAH. Dietrich won a 17-7 major decision over Tri-Valley’s Zach Powell before falling 8-3 to Marion/Freeman’s Ethan Ortman.
Tanner Christenson (120) and Caleb Pitsenberger (126) both won a consolation match after losing in their opening-round matches.
Christenson lost a 7-2 decision to Garretson’s Hunter Abraham, but beat Tim Epp of Marion/Freeman, 4-2, to stay alive. He then lost by fall in 2:26 to Jovey Christensen of BAH.
Pitsenberger lost by fall in 1:13 to Wagner’s Bradyn Lhotak before coming back with 17-7 major decision win over Zach Powell of Tri-Valley. He then dropped an 8-3 decision to Marion/Freeman’s Ethan Ortman.
Brayden Wiese (106), Kolby Peters (138) and Sergio Morales (220) went 0-2 and were eliminated.
Wiese lost by fall in 1:52 to Philip Area’s Thane Simons and then lost by fall in 2:43 to Spencer Upton of BAH.
Peters lost an 11-3 major decision to Elk Point-Jefferson’s Gavin Jacobs before losing by fall in 2:12 to Windom-Mountain Lake’s Trenton Renquist.
Morales lost by fall in 33 seconds to Jesse Hastings of Mt.Vernon/Plankinton/Corsica-Stickney before losing by fall in 1:15 to BAH’s Alex Jensen.
 The Fliers head to Howard on Tuesday to compete in a quadrangular with the Tigers, Deuel and Hamlin.
