Fliers send two wrestlers to state B this weekend

FREEMAN – Flandreau’s Braden Peters and Hunter Witte qualified for state during the Region 2B Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.
Peters placed second at 285 pounds and Witte was third at 113.
Peters pinned Viborg-Hurley’s Ethan Engen in 3:53 in the quarterfinals and Tri-Valley’s Ethan Nehlich in 5:30 in the semifinals. Elk-Point Jefferson’s Drake Peed edged Peters 1-0 in the title bout.

Witte bounced back from a 9-5 quarterfinal loss to Garretson’s Jayse Miller. He won by fall in 1:00 versus Viborg-Hurley’s Josh Roth and then earned a 4-2 decision over Parker’s Logan Buseman in the consolation semifinals to earn a state tourney bid. Witte dropped Miller 8-2 in the third-place matchup.
Tanner Christenson (120 pounds) and Chase Reed (220) both were eliminated in the consolation semis.
Christenson, who went 1-1, fell 4-2 to McCook Central/Montrose’s Carter Randall. Reed, who finished 1-2, was pinned in 35 seconds by MCM’s Cole Grasma.
Brayden Wiese (106), Caleb Pitsenberger (126), Caleb Dietrich (132) and Kolby Peters (138) each finished 0-2.
Canton won the team title with 265 points and the Fighting Cougars were second at 132.5. Flandreau finished ninth with 34 points.
The Class B State Wrestling Tournament is Friday and Saturday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City.
