Fliers send 16 athletes to state

FLANDREAU – The Flier girls placed fourth and the boys ended up fifth in the Region 2A Track and Field Meet on Thursday at home.

The top two finishers in each event along with those meeting the qualifying standards automatically qualify for state.

The Class A State Track and Field Meet begins May 25 at Lyle Hare Stadium in Spearfish and concludes May 26 at O’Harra Stadium in Rapid City.

Girls

Madison totaled 197 points to win the title, with Hamlin (176) taking second. Flandreau (88) was fourth.

Flandreau’s Madeline Hursey qualified in the 3,200-meter run after placing second in 12 minutes, 43.2 seconds.

The Fliers had three relay teams take second and punch their tickets to state – Isabella Pavlis, Hannah Parsley, Kathy Parsley and Ashtyn Bertram in the 4x200 (1:49.8) and 4x400 (4:21.9); and Madline Hursey, Elizabeth Hursey, Mara Lunday and Hannah Parsley in the 4x800 (10:20.9).

Bertram qualified in the 100- and 200-meter dashes during the regular season. Flandreau also qualified for the medley relay earlier in the year.

Boys

Madison racked up 201.5 team points and Hamlin (135.5) ended up second. Flandreau (98) finished fifth.

The Fliers had four individuals qualify for state in addition to a pair of relay teams.

Michael Witte won the 300-meter hurdles in 44.3 seconds.

Placing second were Andrew Julson in the 200 (23.2), Gabe Hobbie in the 3,200 (11:36.5) and Nathan Kneebone in the triple jump (37-10).

Trevor Hahn, Brendan Ten Eyck, Witte and Julson placed second in the 4x200 with a 1:37.7 clocking. Julson, Witte, Connor LeBrun and Ten Eyck scored in second in the 4x400 in 3:40.

Andrew Julson: 200 (2nd at regions)

Michael Witte: 300H (1st at regions)

Madie Hursey: 3200 (2nd at regions)

Nate Kneebone: TJ (2nd at regions)

Medley: Ashtyn Bertram, Kathy Parsley, Hannah Parsley, Libby Hursey (prequalified at Howard Wood)

4x800: Madie Hursey, Libby Hursey, Mara Lunday, Hannah Parsley (2nd at regions)

Boys Relays: 4X200: Trevor Hahn, Brendan Ten Eyck, Michael Witte, Andrew Julson (2nd at regions)

4x4: Andrew Julson, Michael Witte, Connor LeBrun, Brendan Ten Eyck (2nd at regions)
